Spring Road Safety Information

from the Crow Wing County Highway Department
March 11, 2016
With warmer temperatures forecasted spring may unofficially be here. Spring can bring new unexpected hazards to roadways. Soft spots, potholes, motorcycles, bicyclists, animals and even people are now more noticeable.
Soft spots happen expectantly when the frost begins to soften up the soil beneath the road. The softening can create humps, dips, lead to potholes or even roadway blow outs. Please try to avoid hitting these areas by being aware of these conditions and drive at safe speeds.
Motorcyclists will almost certainly be out riding with the warmer temperatures. Please remember the roadways may still have sand present from the winter’s snow & ice control efforts. The sand, mainly on curves and at intersections can contribute to a motorcycle’s tires losing traction with the road. When in a vehicle please be watching for motorcyclists also using the roadway.
Bicyclists and pedestrians will be using the roadways more. Please be on the lookout while driving. If you are riding a bike or are out walking wear highly visible clothing so motorists can see you. Events such as parades and shows have many people present and can contribute to roadway congestion. Please be aware of additional hazards in these areas.
Obey all laws and drive for the road conditions present. Please don’t drive distracted or under the influence.
